On a winding dirt road just north of San Jose del Cabo, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, you will find two exceptional eco-friendly communities; Acre Baja and Flora Farms. Although close in proximity, these two projects are extremely different, and each have their own unique atmosphere and amenities.

Acre Tree Houses

Open in late November, the tree houses at Acre are one of the most unique vacation experiences you will find in Mexico. I had the opportunity to stay in one of their 12 brand new tree houses and dine at their on-site restaurant and it was fantastic! Each tree house features a king size bed, bathroom, closet, outdoor shower and sitting area on the deck.  Almost everything inside the tree house is made locally including the furniture and light fixtures while bedding and textiles come from Oaxaca.  Even the walls are constructed with ‘palo de arco’ sticks from right here in the Baja. Although compact, they feel very open, airy and private. Interior curtains can be closed for extra privacy, but I guarantee you will feel like you are staying in your very own palm tree jungle. They also have one deluxe suite that includes two tree houses connected via a suspension bridge, ideal for a small family or group.

Rates for the tree houses range from $275/night in the low season, to $350/night in the high season, plus tax. Daily room rate includes maid service, breakfast, morning yoga class and other classes coming soon. Each tree house is equipped with a touchscreen tablet concierge, making room service requests quick and easy, and will be equipped with high-speed wireless internet (also available at restaurant and pool).

The restaurant at Acre is open to the public for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and features an International menu using sustainable products from local farmers and Acre’s on-site garden. We sampled a variety of menu items during our stay, each expertly prepared with special care taken for my food allergies. In addition to fantastic service, and food and drink options, Acre guests can enjoy the pool surrounded by funky hexagonal tiles, a bocce ball court, ping pong table, fire pit with a giant Jenga game, and visiting with the many resident farm animals including roosters, peacocks, goats and dogs. Guests eager to get away for a day at the beach can enjoy Acre’s partnership with nearby El Ganzo beach club.

Acre is the creation of business partners Stuart McPherson and Cameron Watt who came to Cabo six years ago and began developing their extraordinary vision which currently includes a restaurant, pool, event space, and the newly opened tree houses. Although kids are welcome, the property caters more to adults with a cool sexy vibe. A store that will offer grab and go snacks and other convenient travel items is currently under construction at the entrance to the property, as well as ample guest parking. Future Acre phases will include 30 or so two-level bungalows (both full and fractional ownership) and 30-35 villas. For reservations, call (624) 171-8226  @AcreBaja

The Culinary Cottages and Hillside Haylofts at Flora Farms

Just a minute up the road you will find Flora Farms, a growing organic farm community offering full and fractional ownership residences, a wonderful farm to table restaurant, and other exciting amenities coming soon!

Launched in December 2012, the Culinary Cottages were the first real estate opportunity offered at Flora Farms. The ten handcrafted luxury cottages feature 2 or 3 full bedrooms, plus a den with a queen sofa bed, private entry, 24-hour security, outdoor area with covered patios and hand tended private gardens where guests have full harvest rights. While the Culinary Cottages are now established residences, the Hillside Haylofts at Flora Farms are still under construction. The Haylofts are being constructed between what will soon be bountiful tiered gardens, and will offer 2.5 or 3.5 bedrooms (a den with sofa bed is considered a half bedroom). They are a professional chef’s dream with fully stocked and equipped kitchens. Each residence is completely furnished with all doors, furniture and finishes skillfully handcrafted at the farms onsite workshop.

Owners at Flora Farms appreciate deeded real estate ownership and amenities including a European swimming hole with plans for fish, turtles and a rope swing, yoga classes, and a spa (currently offering limited availability to the public). All owners benefit from full harvesting privileges. The farm employs 200+ local employees with 3 generations of farmers. All the food is fresh farm to table, sourced from their onsite gardens, 15-acre mango orchard and 100-acre ranch with livestock, pigs, and chickens. They even have their own butcher. The Flora Farms property already has several stores including a café and wine shop, handmade soap and lotion store, and clothing boutique, but developers have plans for a total of nine to eleven live/work shops, an organic brewery with neighborhood beer garden, and a new seafood restaurant in the future.
