Halloween, while not traditionally celebrated in Mexico, is celebrated in Cabo to cater to tourists. It is a great reminder that “high season” is here and the holidays are just around the corner! The main street though downtown Cabo closes Halloween night and bars, restaurants and shops hand out candy. Local children (many of whom do not speak English) have caught on to this American tradition and run through town excitedly exclaiming “Trick or Treat”, “Tricky Tricky” or simply “HALLOWEEN” which always makes me laugh. Night clubs throw elaborate costume parties and hundreds of people crowd the streets. If you haven’t been to Cabo for Halloween, you need to!
Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is celebrated throughout Mexico on November 1-2. The 1st is dedicated to deceased infants and children while the 2nd is dedicated to adults. Altars with pictures, candles, food, sugar skulls and décor are displayed to honor and celebrate loved ones who have passed. Families go to graveyards to clean and decorate gravestones and provide offerings of food and flowers for the departed spirits. This is not meant to be scary or morbid…it’s a celebration of life!
A few other notable events are happening during the month of November. The 5th Annual Los Cabos International Film Festival is held at the Cultural Pavilion and the Puerto Paraiso theater November 9-13 (cabosfilmfestival.com). The five-day event promotes the growth of global film culture and tourism in Baja California Sur.
The Los Cabos Humane Society holds their Dressed To The K-9’s charity fundraising event on November 11 to raise money for animal care and community services. This year’s theme is “A Night in Paris” and features French food, fashion, music and even a Moulin Rouge CanCan performance. While sure to be a night to remember, the LCHS provides much needed spay and neuter services to Los Cabos strays and helps end animal suffering. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause (www.humanesocietycabo.com).
For me, the high season means more people, more opportunities, perfect weather and a whole lot of fun. It is a great time to book a trip to Los Cabos!
